Following the death of a Liberian government official, Mr. Patrick Sawyer, from the contagious Ebola virus on
Friday, July 25, the Federal Government has placed a red alert on citizens of Ebola prone countries who are visiting Nigeria henceforth.
Mr Sawyer who was billed to attend the ECOWAS meeting in Calabar, took ill from Ebola on Tuesday, July 22 and died on Friday, July 25.
Six persons made up of Liberians and other West Africans from Ebola-afflicted countries currently attending an ECOWAS meeting in Calabar, were
yesterday ordered to Lagos by the Federal Government for further examination and screening.
The procedure is called contact tracing.
Also, being penciled for screening are all the passengers who were on-board the flight from Monrovia, made a stopover in Lome before arriving Nigeria.
There were 30 passengers or thereabouts on the flight, most of them
non-Nigerians.
The Ebola is an infectious and generally fatal disease marked by fever and severe internal bleeding, spread
through contact with infected body fluids by a filovirus ( Ebola virus ), whose normal host species is unknown.
The Ebola virus is lethal, causing severe viral hemorrhagic fever. 60 percent of persons infected by Ebola in West Africa in recent times, have been killed.
Symptoms of Ebola HF typically include: Fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, weakness, diarrhea,
vomiting, stomach pain and lack of appetite. In pregnant women, abortion (miscarriage) and heavy vaginal bleeding are common Ebola symptoms.
Death usually occurs during the second week of Ebola symptoms, owing to loss of blood.
The first human outbreaks of Ebola on record occurred in Sudan and Zaire in 1976.
The death of Mr. Sawyer is the first reported case of Ebola in Nigeria.
